French smokers have formed a lobby to protect their rights against anti-smoking zealots. The Union for the Rights of Adult Smokers says it will fight the spread of no-smoking zones and rising cigarette taxes. The union claims to represent a voting block of over 12 million people – 20,000 in each of France's political districts. Masseron points out that most members of parliament are elected by a margin of less than 500 votes, so smokers could hold the balance of power.
